Making Theatre Gaining Skills offers free and exciting classes for everyone – explore new interests, learn practical skills, and connect with others in a supportive and inclusive environment, regardless of your background or experience. All our courses are free for anyone aged 19 and over. No previous experience or qualifications are necessary. Here’s some of the classes we’ve recently offered:
Introduction to Costume Making
Start your journey into costume making! Learn the basics of making and altering costumes from scratch, and how to craft flawless, durable costumes using overlockers.
Costume and Prop Making
Inspired by Harry Potter films, Cosplay or Dr Who? The world of costume and prop construction is a mix of clever techniques and ingenious design. Beginners welcome.
Puppet Making and Animation
Explore the fascinating worlds of puppetry and stop motion, making a variety of different puppet forms and bringing them to life for our Puppet Festival.
Scenic Art and Construction
A practical course involving carpentry, painting and some theatrical surprises. You’ll create and decorate theatre set pieces using different techniques and materials.
Lighting, Sound and Visual Effects
Learn the basics of lighting and sound design, rigging and operation. You’ll be given the opportunity to shoot video, create animation and use greenscreen.

Volunteering Opportunities
Making Theatre Gaining Skills participants are often able to join us after their course has ended as a volunteer or Peer Mentor. There are often opportunities to work with us as a volunteer. We also welcome people with specific skills to share with others including construction, carpentry, dressmaking, graphic design etc. From time to time we can offer paid internships which are generally advertised on Facebook, local job websites and industry networks.
