An Evening of Comedy @ The Makerspace!

The Bognor Institute of Laughter presents an evening of comedy featuring some of the best local and South Coast comics!

Featuring up and coming comedians from Bognor and the area, including members of the newly revived Bognor Institute of Laughter. Supported by Comic Relief, tickets are just £10.

New theatre production skills courses

Our new set of courses are coming soon – starting this June.

The two weekly classes will be led by experienced arts practitioners, and will offer the unique opportunity to gain advanced practical skills and enjoy working as a group on creative projects.

Open to anyone, regardless of previous experience or qualifications, the courses will be perfect for people wishing to explore and develop their creative and technical skills. The courses will include:

  • Lighting, Sound and Visual Effects
  • Scenic Design and Construction

Lighting, Sound and Visual Effects

Learn the basis of lighting and sound design, rigging and operation. You’ll be given the opportunity to shoot video, create animation and use green screens.

Scenic Art and Construction

Learn the basics of scenery construction and scenic painting and design. You’ll be given the chance to create your own scene using different techniques and materials.

Each course will run for 8 weeks and classes will be scheduled on Mondays or Tuesdays, lasting two and a half hours. Numbers are limited so to apply, please email info@makingtheatre.co.uk.

Lighting, Sound & Visual Effects Teaching Assistant

Making Theatre Gaining Skills is a social enterprise established in 2013 that provides unique training courses in the Coastal West Sussex area. We work with long-term unemployed people who are affected by mental health issues, learning difficulties and other disabilities.

MTGS has been in residence at the Bognor Makerspace since October 2020. We currently run a range of courses and projects utilizing a learning room, large fabric and craft classroom, training kitchen and a carpentry workshop. The Bognor Makerspace is a large warehouse which is being steadily developed as a community resource, offering space for a range of creative activities.

New Creative Classes for Adults

We are currently developing a programme of weekly classes for adults aged 19+ that is funded by West Sussex County Council. The focus is on puppetry and production skills with the opportunity for people to learn new skills in design, construction and operation over an eight week term.

Production Insight with Hilary Strong

Hilary Strong looks back on a successful 30 year career in theatre production, as Director of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Greenwich Theatre in London and more recently creating unique children’s shows for Making Theatre Gaining Skills. Q&A session with opportunity to find out more about taking a show to the Fringe.

Free Connectors Health Sessions

We would love to invite you to attend our FREE, FUN and FRIENDLY upcoming Connectors Health Information Sessions at The Makerspace in Bognor. The Community Connectors team at The Makerspace is a partnership with VAAC and made up of Makerspace members.

Our monthly programme will be run by our wonderful volunteer Community Connectors – Kate, Tina, Howard. Their role as connectors is to chat and engage with you about health issues and they will offer support and signposting to any information you require to access the health interventions that exist locally.

Free Production Skills Course ?

Looking to improve your chances of being employed? Adults can apply to join a unique one-week employability course combining technical, craft, marketing and customer service work experience that will extend their skills and boost confidence.

This full-time programme offers participants who are actively seeking employment practical, hands-on experience of a range of transferable skills such as teamwork, problem-solving and communication whilst also providing on-going support in tackling gaps in numeracy skills.

This course runs from Monday 16th to Friday 20th October, 10am – 4pm and is free for adults without a level 2 maths qualification.

Bognor Institute of Laughter, hiring! ?

We’re currently reviving the Bognor Institute of Laughter thanks to funding from Comic Relief and are currently seeking a workshop leader.

The Institute of Laughter project gives its members a voice and supports new social connections while developing a range of creative skills.  We work to create comedy from stand up to sketch comedy as well as giving new and established comedians a platform. About the Workshop Leader role

This is a part-time, temporary contract to run for 12 months from the beginning of June. It may be extended, subject to future funding. We are looking for someone with ideas and enthusiasm who will support the enterprise in the following ways:

  • Lead fortnightly practical workshops to enable members of the Institute to develop and improve their skills.
  • Contribute to the programming of the public events by selecting and rehearsing items created by members, and hiring external comics.
  • Working in partnership with the Project Manager, encourage participants to get involved in the marketing/communication process and support the development of the Steering Group.
  • Help organise events, open-mic sessions and performances.

An interest in all things comedy (stand-up, sketches, songs, visual comedy) and a background in applied theatre, performance art or related areas, is important.

Hours/Pay

£30 per session for a 90 minute workshop, twice a month. Additional hours may be required in the run-up to public events.

New courses starting soon! ?

New courses are starting soon at our home in the Bognor Makerspace, including carpentry, cooking, diy and more. Interested in learning cooking skills from an experienced chef, or in sewing or upcycling clothes that no longer fit? Then these courses might be perfect for you!

Funded by Multiply, these courses are free for adults and integrate basic numeracy skills and may allow you to benefit from follow-on maths tuition or further study and volunteering opportunities.

Open Day at the Makerspace!

On Tuesday 7th February from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, we’re hosting an open taster day at the Bognor Makerspace! Come and try taster sessions of all our three practical courses:

  • Cookery
  • Fabric workshop
  • DIY/Carpentry

No need to book, just turn up and have a go. Free of charge and open to adults of all ages.  Full weekly courses start at the end of February.
